Why I Carry a Phone Tether for Backcountry Hunting
Six miles into the mountains, I lost my phone. That experience pushed me to find a practical way to keep it connected to my gear while still being able to use it.
A phone is easy to take out for a map, a photo or a quick check—and easy to leave behind when you start moving again. A tether adds a connection between your phone and your setup.
What Is a Phone Tether?
A phone tether connects your phone to your gear through an attachment point on a compatible phone case.
With a retractable setup, you can extend the cord to use your phone while keeping it attached. Before heading out, check that the attachment is secure and that the phone remains comfortable to use throughout the available reach.
What to Check Before Choosing a Setup
Phone and case compatibility. Your case needs to work with the attachment. Check the fit, charging-port clearance and connection before taking it into the field.
Usable reach. Think about where you’ll attach the tether and whether you can comfortably view your screen from there.
Retraction force. Retraction force describes the cord’s pull; it should not be treated as a load rating or a guarantee that the tether will retract the full weight of your phone.
Placement. Choose a secure attachment point that keeps the cord clear of other equipment. Test it while wearing the pack or clothing you’ll actually use.
The Backcountry Lite Setup
The Boomerang Hunting Series Gear Tether provides 24 inches of reach and 4 oz of retraction force.
The Backcountry Lite Phone Tether Pack includes a phone case tether and attachment clip for connecting a compatible phone and case to a retractable gear tether.
To buy both together, open the gear tether product page and select Backcountry Lite Phone Tether Pack under Complete Your Setup. The gear tether is $18.50 and the phone attachment pack is $6.99, for a combined product price of $25.49 before shipping and tax.
Test It Before the Trail
Fit the attachment, connect the tether and practice using your phone with your gear on. Check every connection and make sure the cord moves freely.
Losing my phone six miles into the mountains gave me a reason to rethink how I carried it. Now, keeping important gear connected is part of preparing for the trip.
